Amorphous Island

Edward Brooke-Hitching’s The Phantom Atlas explores the concept of imaginary islands, highlighting how their cartography is shaped by various media. Some islands are mapped through words, tales, and stories, while others are depicted through impressions, collages, images, drawings, and naval maps. Each medium offers unique insights, resulting in different perceptions and understandings.

Our project, Amorphous Island, is a spatial cartography inspired by the concept of the “Amorphous Island” and the processual perception described in Tlön. This island is designed to transcend the limitations of written and visual media. By utilizing Virtual Reality—a relatively new and underexplored medium—we create a novel visual language that conveys insights through immersive impressions and experiential engagement.
